Hey all guys,
we are finally in our last bout before presentations! I bet everyone’s nervous and excited on how we are to wow our instructor!
since i’m a person who constantly waxes nostalgic (hey i love memories) let’s go through the chapters taught and my 2 cents on each.
History of Communication – When our instructor (hereby known as HKL) told us about Idols of the Tribe, I began to think about every (and i mean) EVERY instance i could. but I rarely could find it because though Francis Bacon had a clear mind of explaining it to us, i feel that it’s pretty much outdated and i realise that some issues like misunderstandings which is known as idols of the cave be known as simply .. misunderstandings. Theories imo are known as a guideline, but it is up to us to make it relevant
Perception – My favourite topic, due to its biggest relevance to my everyday life. Since then, my group and i constantly check each others Non Verbal Communications out on a daily basis. No wonder i scored quite well for this quiz! That being said however, I realised that the use of NVC can be applied onto print ads as well as on screen instead of just in real life. since then, i’ve missed the plots of many movies thanks to my game of find-the-NVC in every movie. (do you realise that UP! the movie has the highest count of proxemics amongst all the NVC shown?)
Interpersonal relationships – My sentimental topic. when HKL went through the Knapp model of relational development, i kinda ran through my previous relationship as well as my dates and where it went wrong. I realised that I tend to went into the Stagnating shape whenever i wanted to terminate it. so in a sense, the circumscribing was pretty much lapsed whenever i wanted to end my dates. That being said, I began to explore the idea of an interpersonal relationship between a movie maker and its audience. and how the conception of say a movie is made, by the moviemaker sussing out the audience (INITIATING stage) by having focus groups, research etc..
Culture – the template for living! I enjoyed this topic as it sparked lots of debates among the class for Asia being high context, but a few individuals or rather, a whole new wave of generation 1987 and above having more low context culture behaviour thanks to the influence of western media.
that’s about most of my favourite topics covered so far! do tell me about my views on the chapters. I’d love to hear what were your enjoyable chapters too!
I’d like to thank our instructor HKL for giving us an enjoyable module, even though it started out being very intense and awkward (“NO GRACE PERIODS”), certainly a testament to Knapps Initiating stage, but the class slowly warmed up to her and we’re slowly getting the hang of speaking our in discussions when she throws questions to the floor.
I myself have learnt that communication has many layers and many interpretations and it is crucial that we make no grey matter whenever we are trying to express our opinions and thoughts lest the occurence of miscommunication happens.
I can’t wait for the presentations, Let’s all have fun… oooooooookay? (hint)

Haha! I agree with you on the perceptions part. I found myself saying that word more often as suddenly everything really seems to be revolved around it. I’m also with you when HKL was introducing the Knapp Model to us. I was thinking back about the relationships that I had with others and about the factors that went wrong. It was a good lesson.
Good times… Good times…

hey, though i don’t know you personally, i feel that this comms course has indeed made you a better communications student. looking through your posts, i can see the cultivation of a deeper level of understanding through the concepts shown.
kudos to your rather okay-depth level of analysis. it was a good read!

could you tell me more on western culture? I realise that your every analysis on this blog is on American culture. is this due to your upbringing? nonetheless, it is better than all the posts about Ris Low and the PAP.

Hey Isaac!
Haha nice last entry for COM101 blog! Haha anyway, like you, I always find myself applying what I have learnt in COM class to everyday life.. such as NVB. Also, the part on the Knapp model of development! Haha
See you in school!

hey bro haha cool entry here ooookkkkaaayyyy….. Anyways yes yes. Like you, I also find myself relating what we learned in class to my everyday life, sometimes even involuntarily. It is kinda fun and I think it has made me a little more receptive and sensitive to other people’s forms of communication (Especially non-verbal communications).
Peace out!

Hi Isaac!
I made it! To the last entry, that is. I have enjoyed my time in COM101 as well! I’ve learnt so many things through the communication concepts taught and I can never look at the world the same way again. You can say that my PERCEPTION has been altered slightly. When I watch movies, I look out for non-verbal communication too! When I look at couples, I wonder what stage of the Knapps Model they are at. When I look at myself, I think about what has shaped my perception all these years! So yes, communications theories has iindeed changed our lives.
And this marks my last comment for the Aunty Stalker!!! Your turn! Yay!

Yeah, perception is my favourite topic too. All this time while commenting on other people’s blogs, I find that the topic of perception comes up more often than other topics. How we perceive the world and that which is being communicated to us determines what we communicate. Without any knowledge on the std of perception, the world would not seem as clear to us as it does now after enlightenment on the topic.

Isaac !
I see you left clues about your presentation in your blog, nice.
I love how you used Knapp’s model to briefly explain our relationship with HKL. I guess that is how everything starts, right. We cant’t just expect to come into class expecting the instructor to just open up to us like that, right. Anyway, yes, Com 101 is a very enjoyable class, right. But i think we were quite fortunate to have rather crazy classmates too, right. After seeing all our classmate’s presentations, I can’t help but have this enormous sense of Communications pride. Right?
Ooooookay.

know, subconsciously at times i will show off in front of sharbana bout knapp’s model and apply it in our life, like also when we were at “godmom’s” place, we were dishing out your past r/s and used knapp’s model again.

I think it was indeed a rather interesting module.
I had a great time with our project! I think we were like crazy recapping all which we have learnt and applying it to the movie which we chose.
Well, for me, I think I start taking note more of culture differences, perceptions and non verbal communication concepts after learning about them!

I think that knowing more about NVC should actually help you understand plotlines better because you have a better understanding of the various relationships and unspoken messages in the movie.
I personally find myself able to predict storylines alot more accurately when I recognise certain key NVCs
I loved culture and NVC too. Culture because I find myself very westernised and wanting to reconcile with my ancestral roots for some reason. Also because i feeel sad for the Chinese language and culture. That Chinese is not viewwed as “cool in school” anymore

Whoo westernisation is one of my favourite topics too. Now i’m wondering if the rise of china will be able to bring up a generation of americans that think chinese with a china accent is cool? Will china be able to export traditional chinese music as an affluent craft reserved for the higher echelons of society?
You never know!
